In the case of Else Seel, ... we find a person who came to this country not only with a wide-eyed curiosity and a firm commitment, but who was to spend twenty-five years in the Canadian wilderness and who possessed the proven literary ability to mould her experiences into documents of lasting value.
 

She had voluntarily given up a life of burgeoning success in a dynamic metropolis, had left behind her the rich cultural traditions of Europe, and had chosen a life of hardship and simplicity in a country totally unknown to her and in a place she could not even begin to imagine. ...
 

... The selections from the writings of Else Seel which have been included in this volume are intended to illustrate the range of literary concerns during her life in Canada. Since this is a book of the writings of a German-Canadian writer, appearing in a series on German-Canadian writers, it is only proper that the selections be in large measure taken from her Canadian experience. Nevertheless a few selections have been included from works that were begun in Germany and then later revised in Canada.
 

Else Seel's special talent lay in the observation and the literary recording of the fundamental nature of pioneer life. The people who inhabit her works are living on the very edge of nature, face to face with the stark reality of a harsh existence which has none of the amenities or sophistications of modern urban life. In Else Seel's works simple lives are captured in simple language, direct emotion is expressed directly. There is nothing artificial or clever or manufactured in these pages; nor is that necessary. Everything that is described here actually happened, although it has of course been filtered through the poetic screen of the writer's mind. Even her own diary she described as 'my novel.'
 

The poems and stories of Else Seel capture the life of the people of Wistaria and the area around Ootsa Lake: ... the people of Wistaria, as described by Else Seel, are symbols not just of all pioneers, but of all human beings reduced to the basic elements of existence. When the 'urbane' and 'sophisticated' trappings of modern life are flung aside, we are all left with the same essential emotions, desires and needs as the people in these works. These pages are thus not only a record of pioneer life, but of life itself."

... In dieser Sammlung wurde eine Auswahl von Else Seels Schriften getroffen. Da dieses Buch über eine deutschkanadische Dichterin in einer Serie über deutschkanadische Schriftsteller erscheint, schien es angebracht, nur ihre in Kanada verfaßten Schriften zusammenzustellen. Es wurde aber auch einiges aufgenommen, was in Deutschland angefangen und später in Kanada revidiert worden ist.
 

Else Seels Begabung lag in ihrer gekonnten Beschreibung des Pionierdaseins, das auf ihrer starken Beobachtungsgabe beruht. Die Menschen, die auf diesen Seiten so lebendig geschildert werden, wohnen am Rande der Natur. Ihr Leben ist hart, und die Bequemlichkeiten des modernen Großstadtlebens kennen sie nicht. Ihre einfache Lebensweise wird in einfacher Sprache beschrieben; starke Gefühle werden stark und rein dargestellt. Wir finden nichts Gekünsteltes oder Raffiniertes. Alles, was hier geschieht, hat sich wirklich ereignet, obwohl das wirklich Erfahrene durch einen dichterischen Filter geflossen ist. Sogar ihr eigenes Tagebuch nannte sie ja ‚meinen Roman'.
 

Die Gedichte und Erzählungen von Else Seel stellen das Leben der Menschen dar, die in Wistaria und in der Gegend um Ootsa-Lake wohnten. ... Die Leute von Wistaria sollen nicht nur historisch wahr sein, sie sollen nicht nur als typische Vertreter aller Pioniere gelten, sondern sie sind symbolisch für den Menschen überhaupt, der die Annehmlichkeiten der Zivilisation von sich geworfen hat und nun die grundlegenden menschlichen Leidenschaften und Wünsche in unverhüllter Weise verkörpert.
 

Die Bedeutung von Else Seels Schriften liegt also nicht nur in ihrer Schilderung der Pioniererlebnisse, sondern darüber hinaus in der Darstellung des Lebens überhaupt."
