"The aim of this study is to present to the public, for the first time, an overall picture, a general survey -- covering the space of 175 years -- of the most significant occurrences, of the historical forces within the development of the, at one time almost totally German, Grand River settlement. Thereby, the achievements shall be revealed, the fortunes as well as the problems and, last but not least, also the great contributions which the German element made in all areas of life to the evolution of the County of Waterloo, to the Province of Ontario, and indeed to Canada itself.
 

In order to achieve the envisioned goal, we did not have in mind a systematic and complete presentation. This is already indicated by the title of our study. The author tended to lean rather towards a loose form with vivid and lively reproductions of authentic photos and documents whereby the selection tended to be governed to a certain extent more by stories of human interest. To be sure, the process placed certain limits on the discussion of our topic both with regard to the selection of material as well as with respect to the manner of treatment. Nevertheless, the research into our subject matter was conducted according to scholarly principles so that the pertinent factors, the typical and characteristic features, the essential and long-term aspects are highlighted.
 

In dealing with the many faceted special structure of the German ethnic group in Waterloo (Pennsylvania German Mennonites, Germans from all regions within the former borders of Germany, German-speaking people from east and southeast Europe), we strove to place the emphasis on the Germans of all Europe and on the interplay of all groups -- the Mennonites have already been studied rather extensively."
 

"Das Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es ... der Öffentlichkeit zum ersten Male eine einheitliche Schau, d.h., über einen Zeitraum von 175 Jahren eine zusammenfassende Gesamtübersicht der wichtigsten Ereignisse und geschichtsbildenden Kräft in der Entwicklung der einst fast rein deutschen Grand River Siedlung zu vermitteln. Damit soll gleichzeitig das Geschaffene, das Schicksal sowie die Problematik und nicht zuletzt der große Beitrag offenbar gemacht werden, den das deutsche Element auf allen Lebensgebieten zur Entfaltung der Grafschaft Waterloo, der Provinz Ontario, ja selbst für Kanada geleistet hat.
 

Um das gesteckte Ziel zu erreichen, war nicht an eine systematische und vollständige Darstellung gedacht, wie es der Titel unserer Studie andeutet. Der Verfasser neigte vielmehr zu einer aufgelockerten Form, einschließlich der anschaulichen und belebenden Reproduktionen von authentischen Bildern und Dokumenten, wobei persönlich-menschlichen Schicksalen ein gewisser Vorrang gegeben wurde. Damit sind der Erörterung unseres Gegenstandes allerdings bestimmte Grenzen gesetzt sowohl in der Auswahl des Stoffes als in der Art seiner Behandlung. Dessen ungeachtet, wurde die Untersuchung unseres Themas streng wissenschaftlich fundiert, sodaß die entscheidenden Faktoren voll zum Tragen kommen, wie das jeweils Typische und Charakteristische, das Wesentliche und Dauerhafte.
 

Bei der Behandlung der vielschichtigen volklichen Sonderstruktur des Deutschkanadiertums in Waterloo (pennsylvaniendeutsche Mennoniten, Deutsche aus allen Gauen des alten Vaterlandes, Sprachdeutsche aus Ost- und Südosteuropa) waren wir bemüht, den Nachdruck auf die Europa-Deutschen und das Zusammenspiel aller Gruppen zu legen - das Mennonitentum ist bereits ziemlich erschöpfend untersucht worden."
